Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design’s Special Project Group was chosen to design various window graphics for the Milwaukee Public Market during the 2025 holiday season. Each of the designers on the Special Projects Group team were given multiple windows to design holiday/winter themed graphics to adorn the windows. MPM wanted us to all showcase a different style of design to achieve a gallery-like effect for these graphics. This project also coincides with MPM’s 20th anniversary.

Problem: I was tasked with creating a holiday themed piece of art/design that would be placed on multiple windows. The design also was too be somewhat unique in contrast to my classmates who were also part of the group so that all of our styles came together in a manner similar to a gallery. It was also suggested that the art was relevant to the theme of Milwaukee and the many communities that Milwaukee Public Market serves.

Solution: I decided to create a Lois Ehlert inspired collage-style piece because of her connection to Milwaukee and my personal connection to her art, growing up reading books that she illustrated. I bought many different colors of construction paper and checked out her book ‘The Scraps Book’ from the library to study her style and gain inspiration. Within this piece, I incorporated a wintery Milwaukee scene that highlights many of the different communities of Milwaukee, various landmarks that illustrated my childhood such as The Hoan Bridge, the City Hall building, the iconic orange sculpture ‘The Calling’, the Pierhead Lighthouse, the Allen-Bradley Clock, and The Mitchell Park Domes. I also included Canadian geese and mallard ducks because of their prominence in Milwaukee during winter when other birds head south.
