Art+Fact is a fictional brand that I created for my packaging design class that explores ancient cultures across the world by highlighting the beautiful art and artifacts from these cultures and including historical facts with the product to promote cultural appreciation. Ideally, this brand would also have a website that acts as a source for anthropological studies so that people can access information freely, donate to causes, and better understand their roots as a piece of the story of humanity.
For this project I did extensive research on the Zhou Dynasty of Ancient China to showcase how a culture could be implemented into a set of designs and set a precedent for the amount of care that should be put in to accurately represent various ancient cultures. I chose to design a clothing line that represented this culture as well as packaging, tags, and a box that houses various products. I also printed physical tags and mounted them to show how the tags would actually look when seen in-store. In the future, I would also like to design more lines for other cultures to further exemplify the concept.
Problem: I was tasked with creating an original fashion brand that I could apply multiple aspects of branding to, including hang tags, permanent branding, and a shipping box designed with user experience in mind.
Solution: Utilizing my love for anthropology and ancient art, I decided to make a brand focused on the aesthetics of artifacts. Because I wanted the brand to be informational and promote cultural appreciation, I decided to name this brand Art+Fact (pronounced ‘artifact’) to clearly demonstrate the relationship that these aesthetics have to a real world ancient culture with rich history that is often not known to the average person—oftentimes not even to the descendants of these cultures. From there, I chose to showcase the art and history of the Zhou Dynasty because I personally really love the bronze masks that were created during this period and I wanted to explore and highlight this culture authentically. I then created a mark that was culturally ambiguous to avoid misrepresenting any specific culture as well as to be able to represent many different cultures without seemingly championing any specifically. I started by creating a shirt design and then I subsequently created each of the other clothing designs and packaging design assets. I then had to make a presentation utilizing all of these assets and present it as well as print out the tags I created and hang and mount them.
