During my first few months at Zoological Society of Milwaukee (the society located within the Milwaukee County Zoo), I was one of the three designers that submitted a concept for the zoo’s annual ‘A La Carte’ event. Luckily, my poster was selected and was printed and placed in many small businesses around the Milwaukee area. The briefing for the project was relatively loose, but both the zoo and the society have specific rules on which animals should be shown in marketing-related pieces and how they should be portrayed. Because of this, I strictly portrayed animals that were current residents within the zoo—as well as choosing a range of different types of animals from different sections of the zoo. In addition to the illustrated elements of the flyer, I also was tasked with laying out each of the artist names in various tiers based on their level of popularity. I was also tasked with making a version of this graphic to be posted as an Instagram story and in addition to that, the graphic was also used on A-frames and staff IDs which were produced by CultureXDesign.

I also happen met up with and gifted artists Wave Chapelle and NileXNile with poster on the day they performed at the zoo!

Problem: I was tasked with designing a flyer that represented the Milwaukee County Zoo’s A La Carte event. This entailed accurately representing animals that resided in the zoo and making them fit in various places without interfering with the list of performing artists. I also had to find room for the A La Carte 40th Anniversary logo and a QR Code to buy tickets.

Solution: Using the knowledge I know of the animals at the zoo and the goals of both MCZ’s and ZSM’s marketing teams, I created a flyer that was illustrative and fun to appeal to as many age groups as possible. This flyer contained various animals that resided in the zoo and showcased each of the performing artists names in various tiers.
